Parents Selling Dining Room to Prepare for Major Life Changes

Hi JenCin Followers,
Today I"m posting a link to my parent's dining room. They have decided to remodel their home to prepare for my dad to come home from rehab.  He has had a total of 7 surgeries all a result of arthritis. Today we are preparing to bring him home from rehab after he completely collapsed after weeks of pain and deterioration in his ability to walk due to  5th degenerative disk in his back. He had an emergency spinal fusion. The neurosurgeon explained that his spinal column, that is supposed to be about the with of a sausage, was in my dad's back the size of two pieces of paper. He is anxious to return home with my mother and is finding that recovery isn't going as quickly as we had all hoped. We are still hopeful that he will get total use of his legs but it will be a journey for him.  My mom has been very proactive about doing what she can to get him home again.  She has decided to remodel and make a master on the main with all the necessary special needs that my dad will require during his recovery. They are going to add a bathroom and a bedroom where the living room used to be and move the living area to the dining room. There will be no where to put the furniture so we are helping her post it online. Square Oak Table Start to Re-Finish

Ten years ago I purchased a lot of used equipment from a Coffeehouse at Lake Oconee to open a coffeehouse in downtown Lawrenceville. That inventory included six beautiful oak pedestal tables. 3 square tables and 3 round tables.  During the recent sale of all the assets after closing The Singin' Bean at the end of March 2012. I found that the restaurant industry wasn't interested in these tables that had been bought and sold multiple times and thoroughly used and enjoyed for over nine years by all of our customers including some rather severe scratches and deep bright orange and purple marker stains that went all the way down to through the dark finish into the natural wood.  They still looked amazingly good for the wear and tear they had been subjected to.  This refinishing story will focus on one of the square tables.  You can tell the wear and tear around the base and edges.

The original plan was to sand paint white and distress this table and have it ready to replace the round oak table that was already in the booth at Ally's Attic. I completed 2 of the chairs by also painting them a matte white. and they look amazing if I do say so myself.I sanded this table by hand it was both medative as well as exhausting and can I just say OW to my shoulder aches. So luckily my stepson has a sander he wasn't using and let me borrow it to see if I liked the way it worked.                           

I started this past week sanding square table using the rotary electric sander.  Wow, what a difference. I sanded the table in half the time it took to sand the first table. I used the Zinsser Primer (that I like a lot but is very thick,) on the pedestal base. I decided to turn try turning the table upside down and painting the pedestal from the bottom up to see if I could cut down on some of the dripping and re-sanding I had to deal with on the first table.  It worked great.  I was able to sand the entire table base and put 2 coats of base paint on the pedestal in one day. Thank you technology.  So I now to do the top. We flipped it back over and.. oh my.. Is anyone else seeing what I'm seeing.  This table might just look excellent stripped and stained on top. The original plan to paint the table white and distress like the round table above but.... So it was off to Facebook I go. I posted this pic and asked my facebook friends their opinions. Some said green top some said black base some said strip and stain.  I had to see after all what would it cost me be some extra time right?  I got so excited about the result that I took my new little electric sander and started sanding right away, Dusk came and went and in the dark I slowly sanded the top until I got a nice smooth finish.  The only problem were the few places with scratches so deep that I sanded all the way to the natural wood. I took some Howards Restoration and what a beautiful color started to emerge.  I really can't even believe it is the same table and I did it myself. I'm really loving the color, but not so much loving the few over sanded areas. So my next step is back to the sander. with  weather now as low as 38 degrees Sanding in the cold fun,fun fun but it must be done. 

Wow this table turned out so amazing. I seriously wish I could just keep this one.  So the final steps of the project. I sanded the entire top down to the original wood. Left no residual stain behind. I love the color so I did what I could to match the color the stain had left behind. I purchased a small can of Minwax golden oak. I took a cotton cloth (aka an old T-shirt) and put on gloves and following the grain of the wood wiped on the stain.  I did one coat and had the perfect color so I stopped there no additional coats. I waited 24 hours then sanded with fine steel wool.
 
I donned another pair of gloves and got a new piece of cloth and wiped on a coat of Minwax Tung Oil.  Side note: I have to say I'm liking the Minwax products. They are really easy to work with.  I followed the instructions on the container. Buffing after 15 minutes then waiting 24 hours and putting on a second coat. It recommends 3-4 coats to make the surface waterproof. So the process took several days I just did a new coat everyday at 3 then buffed it out for shine after 15 minutes. (The instructions said to sand each coat prior to adding more with steel wool so I did that too) The third and final coat I didn't buff it out. I just wiped it on and let it dry 24 hours. The result was a nice subtle shine. So here are the final pictures. It's ready for resale but not in the booth yet. If you know someone looking for a beautiful table ask them to contact me. It could be a great entry table or small kitchen table.

Jen & Cin walk together to Stop The Hate. Angel Action Atlanta

I am dedicating a second blog to Stopping the Hate. I will get back to sharing ideas and refinishing furniture soon but I wanted to share a great experience with our readers. On Sunday October 14th, Jennifer and I walked in the Pride Parade in Downtown Atlanta carrying signs with Angel Action Atlanta spreading messages, "Stop the Hate." Love, "Freedom," "Equality" and many more.  Action Angel-Atlanta is the Atlanta chapter of the group that began in Wyoming after close friend Of Matthew Shepherd, Romaine Patterson, became known for combating the anti-gay antics of the Rev. Fred Phelps, whose followers picketed Matthew Shepard's funeral and the murder trials. Action Angel was founded in April of 1999 created as an organization for peaceful demonstration. Angel Action is now used all over the world as a means of combating hate.

This was my second year walking against hate. I walk for awareness and knowledge. If you know better you do better, right. History has proven that when hate and force are used control the actions of others it historically ends badly. The Salem Witch Hunts, The Spanish Inquisition, Hitler, Stalin, 9/11. History also proves that when actions that come from a place of love and compassion that Love Always Wins. Before some of you start quoting to me Romeo and Juliet's fated "love" story and very very young. Please remember, they were also being controlled by the hate their families had for one another. I learn more everyday and I want so much to live to see a future where everyone is aware of the impact and damage their words and actions can have on a life, and the domino effect of hate that proliferates  if we do nothing to change what we know is right. There are very few people who have not been impacted by words of hate or criticism and been hurt by them, self esteem is very difficult to achieve when you are being judged by others. Some just don't have the strength or support systems in their lives to overcome the cruelty or fear of others. Apathy is also such a scary thought to me. If I do nothing then nothing will change and hate prevails.

I walk so that my children and their friends and future families have a better and more loving and accepting future. I learned a long time ago never to judge anyone until I have walked a mile in their shoes. Since, I cannot walk in anyone's shoes, 

I walk in my own for those who can no longer walk for themselves.

So I guess you can understand why I was thrilled when Jennifer my daughter asked about walking with me this year. Savannah my other daughter is now interested in being a part of Action Angel Atlanta as well. I am anxious to read Jennifer's blog about her first experience. She has such a big big heart. I was pretty persistant with my donation request over the last two weeks. I would say I'm sorry for being a pest for donations, but that would be a lie, I'm not sorry for being your daily reminder for donations because this group needs a lot more support and can't depend on just there members who already do so much to really make a difference. I am so so appreciative of those who were willing to give to this cause this year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your dollars helped make this this walk have a much bigger impact towards awareness of hate. The Angels could be more active in so many other awareness campaigns and be there to protect others from hate, if there were more donations coming in from you. If you can't walk there are other ways to help and please, please consider a donation no matter how small, Would you give some serious thought to your own past and how bullying hurt either yourself or someone around you. I am walking in the Pride Parade in Downtown Atlanta October the 14th for 2nd year with the Action Angel Atlanta Organization. I am proud to be a member of this group as it stands for Anty-Bullying and Anti Hate. Perfect Personalized Omelets without the Pan

Good Morning Blog readers, I know it may not be morning but when you are rereading this for your next weekend breakfast it will be. I can't take credit for this creative way to make an omelet. I can take credit for the pictures below, they were yummy. I got this in a chain email several years ago. You know the ones sent from a friend who copied 50 of their closest friends on it. Now it is either a post or a Facebook or Pinterest Post. So, We (my husband and I)tried it at a party and it was a big success. I know our blog is supposed to be about gifts and reclaimed furniture but it is also about the joy in life and these omelets gave my husband and I a joyful Sunday morning brunch. In about 20 minutes total. Here's how you do it: You are gonna need; A pot 1/2 full of water A sharpie, A zip lock bag for each person's omelet 2-3 eggs per person whatever ingredients you like in your omelet. NOTE: The more ingredients you add the longer your prep time will be.

STEP 1 Prep your ingredients

STEP 2 Boil a large pot of Water Note: If you have more than 6 people you will need to boil additional pots of water

STEP 3 Set a timer for 7-10 minutes (we ended up boiling ours for about 9 minutes)

 

STEP 4 Have everyone put their name on their zip lock bag and add the eggs and other ingredients preferred in their omelet.

STEP 5 Check about 1/2 way through try to keep most of the ingredients in
 the water and adjust accordingly

STEP 6 Remove from the water with tongs, open and slide onto a plate, add salsa, extra cheese etc and Enjoy. And don't forget the OJ of Course! Cindy Pitts Gilbert

Jencin Antiques Moves to Snellville, GA

Great News, September 1, 2012, Jencin Antiques moved it's location from Scotland Yard in Lawrenceville, to Ally's Attic on Hwy 78 in Snellville, GA. We are so excited about the move as our booth space is much larger. Jennifer and I combined all our booths into one space and have lots of furniture, jewelry, home decor, vintage items and antiques for sale.  This weekend is a big holiday sale so you can visit Ally's Attic as well as other local antique stores on the 78 Corridor near the intersection of Scenic Hwy and Hwy 78.
